The educational instruction students receive at River Hills School access the general education curriculum through extended
benchmarks and incorporates instruction of skills in four main areas of daily living. These instructional are: community,
domestic, recreation/leisure, and vocational.
The purpose of instruction in the domestic domain is to enable the student to become as independent as possible in his/her
living environment. Instruction is personal care, food preparation, and housekeeping skills is included in this area.
In the community domain instruction is given to prepare the student to access and use community environments as independently
and completely as possible. Instruction in the areas of shopping, travel, eating out, and use of public services is included
in this domain.
The vocational domain includes instruction in work related skills, job-seeking skills, and skill training. The purpose
of instruction in the vocational domain is to increase the likelihood of students functioning as contributing adults within
our society and increase opportunities of obtaining employment.
The recreation/leisure domain includes instruction to enable students to engage in constructive and personally satisfying
leisure activities in school, home, and the community.
Communication skills, motor skills, and functional academic skills are embedded or included in the instruction of the
four domains.
The goal of the domain curriculum is to prepare students to lead active lives in integrated living, community, vocational,
and recreational settings. Family involvement and support are necessary in planning for the success of the students.
